5 Reasons to wear sunglasses in the fall
Posted by Jim Connolly on 10th Sep 2015
Now that September is here, are sunglasses still necessary? The answer to that question is “yes”. In fact, it’s a resounding YES!
Here are 5 reasons why it’s important to protect your eyes with sunglasses in the fall.
1. Sunglasses prevent UV eye damage in the fall
We can still experience relatively high UV levels during the fall months. Whilst UV levels are at their highest in the summer months, they exist all year around. We now know that sunglasses can protect our eyes from a range of nasty conditions, including skin cancer, macular degeneration and cataracts.
We owe it to ourselves to ensure we protect our eyes all year round. And not only in the summer.
2. Sunglasses protect the skin around the eyes
The skin around the eyes is relatively sensitive. This makes it more susceptible to sun damage. Leaving this area unprotected from UV rays in the fall (or spring / winter), can lead to the premature onset of wrinkles.
The additional protection offered by UV blocking sunglasses is a great way to help protect your vision and the skin around your eyes.
3. Sunglasses help us avoid squinting
If you find yourself in direct sunlight on a fall day, you will need your sunglasses in order to avoid squinting. Squinting is a natural response our bodies have, to shield our eyes from the brightness of the sun.
However, squinting brings 3 challenges with it.
- Firstly, it’s far less effective than wearing sunglasses. Squinting massively restricts our vision, which can lead to accidents.
- Secondly, our eyes are still being exposed to the sun’s damaging UV rays.
- Thirdly, squinting for even a relatively moderate amount of time can lead to eye-strain. Eye-strain can then lead to headaches.
4. Sunglasses protect us from sun glare
Sun glare is a year round issue and not confined to the summer months. Even in winter, the glare caused by sunlight can make driving uncomfortable or even dangerous.
If you have ever found yourself needing to drive into direct sunlight without sunglasses, you will know how challenging it is. So make sure you bring your sunglasses with you. Like many people, I have a pair that I keep in my car all the time, so I never get caught without them.
5. Sunglasses help us avoid dry eyes
When our eyes are exposed to wind, the moisture that’s required for them to function correctly starts to dry out. This is commonly known as having "dry eyes". When we have dry eyes we tend to rub our eyes, which then makes them sore and can cause them to become red. Dry eyes are uncomfortable and can be avoided for most people, by wearing sunglasses on windy days.
The lesson here is simple: Sunglasses are an excellent idea all year round, rather than just during the summer months. They're light, easy to carry and protect us in so many ways that it's hard to justify leaving them at home for 3 quarters of the year.
