Sunglasses in the movies: The Matrix

Posted by James on 11th Aug 2014

Welcome to another look at sunglasses in the movies. We don't just provide wholesale sunglasses to retailers throughout the country. We're passionate about sunglasses. That's why we occasionally take a look at how they have touched different industries, such as the impact of sunglasses in the movies.

The Matrix has gone down in movie history, as one of the biggest and most influential blockbusters of all time. It's also a movie, which used sunglasses as a key part of the image for all the major characters. In fact, the movie posters for The Matrix featured the 4 leading characters, all wearing sunglasses.

Sunglasses: Transforming a geek into Neo

The central character, Neo, was played by Keanu Reeves. The film makers wanted a way to change Neo's look, when he went from being a regular guy, to "the chosen one". Part of that transformation, was the addition of sunglasses.

When Neo was a geeky hacker, he didn't wear sunglasses -- the addition of some cool clothing and a pair of futuristic looking shades completed his transition.

Because people make eye contact as a natural part of communicating, nothing has as huge an impact [or as fast an impact] as sunglasses. A movie director can instantly change the way we feel about a character, by giving them the right kind of sunglasses. It's hard to think of anything else, that would have that kind of immediate effect.

Sunglasses: A missed opportunity?

Unlike other iconic sunglasses in the movies, it seems the ones worn by Neo were built specifically for the movie. Usually, when sunglasses play a significant role in the look of a leading character, there is a tie-in with a major sunglasses designer.

The Oliver Goldsmith designed sunglasses from Breakfast at Tiffany's is a great example. Not only was that design available at the time of the movie, they released replicas, to mark the 40th anniversary of the movie!

There are some sunglasses in the marketplace that are based on the design from The Matrix. However, they tend to vary in quality and how closely they resemble the shades from the movie. As with any kind of sunglasses, if you're thinking of buying a pair, make sure that they have the correct UV protection.
