Sunglasses, laser glasses and aviation

Posted by Jim Connolly on 6th Aug 2015

Ever since the first Aviator sunglasses, there has been a link between aviation [or flying], and shades.

I have some news to share with you today, which shows that eyewear is still important to pilots. In this case, it could literally be the difference between life and death!

Laser danger

As you may know, pilots have faced a serious threat in recent years, from people who take pleasure in pointing laser beams at the cockpit of airplanes. These laser devices are cheap, no bigger than a small flashlight.

However, they can produce a laser beam, which is powerful enough to not only distract a pilot, but also create a real danger, jeopardizing the lives of everyone on board.

News reached me today of a possible solution to this problem. It’s the brainchild of Dr. Perricone, founder of PerriQuest Defense Research Enterprises in Meriden, Connecticut, and his team. They have developed protective glasses for pilots, which shades the laser light to the eye.

They work by blocking red, blue and green light — but still allowing the pilot to identify colors. This is essential, as pilots rely heavily on colors for their cockpit controls and runway / landing.

The glasses are currently awaiting approval from the FAA and the airlines. It will be interesting to see what they decide.

It’s great to know that the technology now exists to protect pilots from the threat posed by lasers. This is yet another example of super-smart people, developing massively valuable solutions, through eyewear. It's also why I believe that when it comes to wearable tech, sunglasses and eyewear in general will prove more useful and popular, than smart watches.
