Sunglasses that make electronic screens more visible in sunlight

Posted by Jim Connolly on 3rd Sep 2015

We all love sunglasses, right? And we love our phones, tablets and laptops too. However, our sunglasses and our devices just don’t get along together. That could be about to change, thanks to a Kickstarter I just discovered.

Allow me to explain.

Sunglasses, sunlight and screens

I’m sure everyone reading this will know how hard it is to read the screen on their phone, tablet or laptop, whilst wearing sunglasses. At best, it’s barely readable and puts a strain on your eyes. At worst, you have to take your sunglasses off, placing your eyes at risk from the suns damaging rays.

Thankfully, this problem is being tackled by NoonWear. They have set up a Kickstarter campaign, for a new line of sunglasses that allow you to shield your eyes from the sun, and still use your devices.

As someone who works with a laptop every day, I like to take the opportunity to work outside whenever I can. This is only currently possible if the sun isn’t out or if I can find a shaded area to work from. Of course, it’s when the sun is shining that it’s nicest to be outside. I know I’m not alone when I say that being unable to work in sunshine is a pain in the rear.

How the sunglasses technology works

According to their Kickstarter page, NoonWear Ones use polarization technology to make screens more visible. This is interesting, as regular polarized lenses have the opposite effect and make it harder to see digital displays.

Apparently, what NoonWear Ones do, is tune the polarizing filters so that they receive all the light from the device, whilst dimming the sunlight. Their Kicksarter page also explains that the polarizing characteristics of different devices varies. In other words, you will need to match your sunglasses to the device or devices you want to be able to use in sunlight. They’re aiming to have NoonWear Ones available for most popular devices.

I’ve believed for some time, that the sunglasses industry (or consumer electronics industry) would need to do something, to make electronic displays more visible when wearing sunglasses. Whoever gets the balance right and markets it successfully first, could have a massive success on their hands.
