May I have your attention please? That may seem like an odd way to start an article on a sunglasses website, but it isn’t. At least, not when the article is about an exciting innovation, which helps people focus their attention.

Allow me to explain.

Dark glasses or clear?

News reached me this week of a very interesting product, called Narbis. The device looks like a pair of sunglasses, but there’s some very interesting technology behind the scenes. 

How does it work? 

In brief, there are 3 sensors and also an arm-mounted, Bluetooth enabled module. This technology, plus some special software, combine to measure brain activity or neurofeedback. According to it’s inventor, Devon Greco, when the device senses you are losing focus, it turns the lenses darker, then when it senses you are focusing correctly, it lightens them again. The idea is that it trains your brain to focus more effectively.

The device comes with a suite of training programs, which you can run on a smartphone. They cover areas such as your mood, focus, stress and calmness. The idea is that you can train your brain to be more effective in those key areas.

Kickstarting the nation’s innovators

Like a number of recent innovations, the Pennsylvania based business behind Narbis are raising money for the project via a Kickstarter campaign. They are looking to raise $150,000, in order to commence production of the glasses.

With so many people now suffering from attention-related disorders, there’s clearly a market for a product, which can successfully help people focus more effectively. Especially one that doesn’t require drugs. If it delivers on its promise, the potential here is huge.

This is certainly something I shall keep an eye on over the coming months.
