Can sunglasses make you a superhero?

Posted by James on 3rd Jun 2015

At 92 years of age, he’s a national treasure. He’s the creator of Spiderman, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, The X-Men and many others. I’m talking about Stan Lee; the sunglasses wearing legend of superhero culture.

Amazingly, Stan Lee is more prolific today than he was when he was 21. This astonishing level of creative output may be his own superpower. And in a recent interview with Todd Aaron Jensen at Biography.com, Stan Lee explains the role his sunglasses play.

Sunglasses and superheroes

For those who don’t know, the superhero legend is seldom seen without his sunglasses. When asked why he wears them, Stan Lee replied:

“I don’t know what it is. I’ve always worn sunglasses. They’re like my mask, I guess. It was probably just some silly affectation. When I was very young and just starting off as a writer, I always lit a pipe and held it in my teeth as I wrote. I hated smoking a pipe, but I felt it made me look older and like a writer. I was 18. Sunglasses are better for your health.”

Sunglasses and masks

When Stan Lee said his sunglasses are like a mask, he’s absolutely right. Rock stars, celebrities and bank robbers etc, use them as a mask to avoid being recognized. Others wear them to mask their eyes, so people can’t see that they’ve had too little sleep or done a little too much partying, etc.

By filtering how we see the world and how the world sees us, sunglasses have become way more important than an accessory or fashion statement.

For many, sunglasses have become an important part of our day to day life.
