The idea for today’s post came to me, when I met up with a former colleague last week. It was the first time we’d seen each other in almost 20 years. The first thing I noticed was how well he looked. Then I realized it wasn’t so much that he looked well... it's that he looked younger than I expected.

The power of sunglasses

After we had been talking for a while, I noticed that he didn’t actually look any younger than me.

Then it dawned on me: He’d taken his sunglasses off just after we met and it was the sunglasses that made him look younger. I wanted to know why, so I did a little research and discovered 2 reasons why the correct sunglasses can help you turn the clock back.

Sunglasses help soften the appearance of wrinkled eyes. I guess this one is obvious. The darkened lenses in sunglasses create a filter, which stops the suns damaging rays from reaching our eyes. However, when wearing our sunglasses, the lenses also change how our eyes appear to others. This filtering makes it harder for people to notice any wrinkled skin around the area covered by the lenses.

Sunglasses stop us from squinting. When we squint, it emphasises the wrinkles around our eyes. When we wear sunglasses, our eyes are protected from the sun’s glare, so we don’t need to squint. (This is especially the case with polarized lenses). 

Of course, sunglasses also protect our eyes from sun damage, which can have an ageing effect on the soft skin around the eyes. This may not create an immediate effect, but it can help us keep our eyes in better condition for longer.
