Now that the boys of summer have gone!

2nd Sep 2014

Question: Can you remember the 1984 hit, which the title of today's post comes from?

Answer: Yes, it was the Don Henley Billboard smash, Boys of Summer.

So, why am I sharing this with you today, September 1st?

"You got that hair slicked back and those Wayfarers on, baby."

No, it has nothing to do with Labor Day.

Firstly, today marks the start of September, the first month of the Fall, and the track is all about the end of summer. Secondly, as you may recall, The Boys of Summer also features the line; "You got that hair slicked back and those Wayfarers on, baby". I love to share movies and videos here, which feature sunglasses as part of our culture.

All in all, this seemed like an ideal, feel-good track to share with you today.

More than sunglasses

A little known fact about The Boys of Summer, is that it has a deeper, hidden meaning than most people realize. In a 1987 interview with Rolling Stone, Henley explained that the lyrics were not about a guy meeting a girl, as it seems. The lyrics were actually about the process of getting older and questioning the past.

Here's a second little known fact about the track. Pat Benatar's husband and guitarist Neil Giraldo, is on record as saying that Don Henley heard him in the studio when Benatar was recording her hit "Love is a Battlefield" and asked if he could borrow "the sound" for Boys of Summer. Giraldo says he agreed and the rest is part of music history.
