Sunglasses are more popular than ever

Posted by James on 17th Dec 2014

According to a report published today by Research and Markets, sales of sunglasses are expected to grow by almost 6%! Whilst this may seem like it's only good news for those who sell sunglasses, there's some wonderful news behind the data.

Sunglasses and eye protection

It seems that the key driver of the significant sales increase isn't fashion or vanity. No. It's something far more important. Thankfully, it now looks like the message regarding the importance of protecting our eyes from the sun's damaging rays is hitting home.

According to the report:

"...one of the major drivers in the global sunglasses market is a rise in awareness among consumers about the regular use of sunglasses to protect the eyes, which has led to an increase in spending among consumers who used to consider them as a non-necessity item."

Good news all around

As someone who writes a great deal regarding sunglasses, that message from this report is great to hear. Health experts have been trying to educate consumers about the importance of eye protection for decades. It now seems that the message is finally getting through.

As I'm sure you will know, there are a number of important reasons why you should wear sunglasses when in sunlight. The American Academy of Ophthalmology warn that being in the sun for prolonged periods, without the protection of UV blocking  sunglasses, can lead to serious eye problems. These range from cataracts and macular degeneration, to growths on the eye itself. That's how important it is to wear appropriate sunglasses with the necessary UV protection.

You can find out about the UV protection you need, plus what the UV numbers you see on sunglasses mean, in this post.
