So, what do you get if you take a cool dog, some sunglasses and a jet ski?
A jet skiing dog wearing sunglasses, of course!
A friend of mind told me that she'd seen a dog wearing sunglasses at the beach recently. At first, I thought she was joking. Then, I did some research and discovered a booming trade in fashion sunglasses for our canine friends. The video above is a great example. Dogs love water and enjoy travelling with the wind in their face, [as anyone with a dog soon discovers, if they drive with a window open!] All of a sudden, a dog riding on his owner's jet ski makes a little more sense.
The sunglasses are adapted into goggles, which are designed specifically for a dog's face and head. The idea is said to have started, when Ms Roni Di Lullo noticed that her dog, Midknight, used to squint a great deal when in the sunlight. Little did she realize that her idea would be the start of a booming niche industry.
However, it seems that as well as fashion, there's a more important element to the whole dogs in sunglasses thing.
Whilst researching this post I discovered that whilst dog sunglasses were initially exclusively a fashion item, they are now used to help dogs with eye conditions. Not only do they protect the dogs eyes from UV rays, they are also worn by dogs with disorders that mean their eyes can't produce tears. Similarly, some dogs with glaucoma wear them.
By the way, if you have not done so already, please check out the video above: Diesel the jet skiing dog.
